Strata Success Stories: David McCurdy – Group Finance Manager

Having recently joined the business as our Group Finance Manager, we took some time to catch up with David McCurdy, to gain some insight on how he has found the joining process and what his plans are for the future at Strata…

How have you found your first few months at Strata?

“I joined Strata in September as part of a relocation from London to Kent.

I am very much office-based here, having been doing more hybrid working in the past, which I am really enjoying now because it is allowing me to get to know the other team members very quickly and allows for a lot of collaborative working.

Currently I am still spending a lot of my time learning about the business and the kind of reporting that is required, looking for opportunities to implement improvements and efficiency.”

 

How did you get into the industry and what has your career journey looked like?

“I first worked in Retail & Hospitality initially, for companies such as Woolworths and Sainsburys in junior management/team leader positions.

At around age 27, I was motivated to move into a career that was more office-based and I decided to make a career shift into finance as it offered more security and better hours, taking a Junior Accounts Position at Charities Aid Foundation, where I trained in the role and achieved my AAT certification and worked in several positions within their finance department for 7 years.

I then moved to North London to take a role with Buro Four Project Services, where I worked initially as a Project Accountant and then worked my way up to Head of Finance after 15 years of being with the business.”

 

What are your plans for your department and the future of Strata?

“With Strata being a growing business, there is a great opportunity to implement some new processes and controls, with new systems coming in-line with the needs of the company growth, including the demand for finance reporting, both internally and externally.”

 

What is the team dynamic like?

 “The team has grown considerably recently and that has brought a lot of new enthusiasm and energy into the office. It is always very busy and there is a lot going on so it is always interesting.

With lots of new changes being implemented, the existing staff members are getting to experience the adaptation process together at the same time as the new staff members alike, which makes for good team cohesion.”

 

What do you like doing outside of work?

“Although I am terrible at it, I enjoy trying to play golf sometimes! I also like meeting up with friends and going out walking.”
