Leon Lamey – Building Services Engineer

Recently, we sat down with one of our newer additions to the team, Building Services Engineer Leon Lamey, to talk through his career journey, what drew him to building services, and the advice he’d give to anyone starting out in the industry.

Be sure to check out his journey below! 👇

Can you talk us through your career journey so far and what led you to your current role as a Building Services Engineer?

“From very early on, I knew I wanted to work in a technical field. I began my career as a maintenance engineer in Jamaica, and when I moved to England, I naturally gravitated toward electrical work. I continued developing my skills in that area and gained further qualifications. As I progressed through different roles, I became increasingly interested in how systems operate, everything from BMS systems to condensers and other building assets.

That curiosity led me into my first building services role, and later I had the opportunity to work with the Army, where I gained experience across a wide range of systems and building maintenance tasks. All of these experiences shaped my understanding of how buildings function and ultimately led me to where I am today as a Building Services Engineer.”

What initially attracted you to this industry, and what has kept you interested in developing your career?

“I’ve always enjoyed learning different skills and understanding how things fit together. Building services gives you the chance to pick up knowledge across multiple disciplines and manage systems on a different level. That variety is what first attracted me to the industry, and what keeps me motivated is the opportunity to continue developing myself. My ambition lies in progressing into management, and this field gives me the foundation to build toward that goal.”

Can you tell us more about your role as a Building Services Engineer, your key responsibilities, and what a typical day looks like for you?

“A big part of my role is giving clients confidence that their assets are being monitored, maintained, and cared for professionally. Every asset is checked, documented, and any required reports or follow-ups are completed thoroughly.

I also manage external contractors, ensuring we source the most appropriate and cost-effective resources to maintain the integrity of the site. Much of my work happens before the wider workforce arrives, so we minimise disruption to the working day and keep operations running smoothly.”

You recently joined Strata and have settled into your role quickly. How have you found the transition into a new business and adapting to a new site environment?

“The transition has been effortless, largely because of the tremendous team around me. Everyone has been really communicative and understanding, giving me the time I needed to settle in and understand my responsibilities.

I’ve worked closely with Mark, and now with David, my site manager, who has gone out of his way to ensure standards remain high and that I’m fully supported in my role. Their guidance has made the move into Strata smooth and positive.”

Starting on a new site can come with its own challenges. How have you approached building relationships with the team, understanding the site, and becoming part of the wider operation?

“Communication has been the most important factor. Understanding the needs of the client and how we all benefit from working together is key.

When I first joined, I took time to observe, getting to know the personalities within the team, understanding where each person’s strengths lie, and learning the lay of the land. That helps you work more efficiently, because you know who is best suited to certain tasks and you can keep everyone clearly informed so we’re all on the same page.”

Looking back on your journey so far, what skills or lessons have been most valuable in helping you succeed in building services?

“Communication is one of the biggest assets. Doing your research, asking questions when you’re unsure, and being aware of your surroundings all make a huge difference.

Consistency is also important; showing up, staying engaged, and continually developing your knowledge helps you build confidence and competence in the role.”

If someone were considering a career in building services or facilities management, what advice would you give them about getting started and building their experience in the industry?

“I’d advise them to be patient and consistent in developing their skills. Building services requires a strong technical mindset, so it’s important to invest time and resources into training and continuous learning. Gaining experience across different trades or areas of the industry is valuable; it helps you discover where your strengths and interests truly lie.

Most importantly, be open to learning from others. Listen to colleagues with more experience, take on different opinions, and be prepared to work as part of a team.

Good communication and collaboration will take you far.”
